Group messaging is essential for team collaboration, family communication, and community coordination. SafeW group chats are designed for encrypted communication, but the practical privacy result still depends on member control, invite links, device security, and current version settings. Creating an Encrypted Group
Creating a group in SafeW is straightforward. After creating it, check the lock indicator, member list, invite links, and disappearing-message settings before using it for sensitive topics.
Basic Creation Steps
How to Create a Group
- Open SafeW and tap the "New Chat" button in the bottom-right corner of the main screen
- Select "New Group" from the options
- Choose members from your contact list (you can also search for specific contacts)
- Tap "Next" and set the group name and avatar
- Tap "Create Group" to finish — your encrypted group is now live
Once the group is created, you'll see a lock icon displayed at the top of the chat interface, confirming that end-to-end encryption is active. As the group creator, you're automatically assigned the owner and default administrator role.
Adding Members via Invite Links
Beyond adding members directly from your contact list, SafeW supports generating encrypted invite links. This is particularly useful when you want to invite people who aren't yet in your contacts:
Generating an Invite Link
- Open the group chat and tap the group name to enter group settings
- Select "Invite Link" or "Add Members"
- Tap "Generate Invite Link"
- Choose the link's validity period: 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, or never expires
- Share the link with invitees through a secure channel
The invite link itself is encrypted, and you can revoke any generated link at any time from group settings. This prevents unauthorized access if a link is accidentally shared more widely than intended.
Group Management and Permission Settings
SafeW provides flexible group management tools that let you fine-tune exactly how your group operates based on your specific needs — from casual friend groups to high-security team environments.
Tiered Administrator Permissions
SafeW groups support a multi-level admin system, allowing you to delegate management responsibilities to trusted members:
- Owner: Holds the highest group authority. Can appoint and remove admins, delete the group, and modify all group settings
- Admin: Can add and remove regular members, edit group information, and moderate messages. Cannot remove other admins or change the owner
- Member: Can send messages and view group information, but cannot perform any administrative actions
Setting Up Administrators
How to Promote a Member
- Open group settings and navigate to the "Members" list
- Long-press on the member you want to promote
- Select "Make Admin"
- Confirm the action
Message Permission Controls
Depending on your group's purpose, you may need to control who can send messages:
- Everyone Can Send: The default setting — all members can freely send messages and participate in discussions
- Admins Only: Ideal for announcement or broadcast groups where only administrators and the owner can post messages
- Moderation Mode: Messages sent by regular members require admin approval before being visible to the entire group
Group Privacy and Security Settings
SafeW offers group-specific privacy and security options that can reduce exposure when they match your use case and platform behavior.
Group Disappearing Messages
Just like one-on-one chats, SafeW groups support disappearing messages. When enabled, all group messages automatically delete after the specified time period:
How to Enable
- Open group settings
- Find the "Disappearing Messages" or "Auto-Delete Messages" option
- Choose a timer: 5 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, or 1 week
- Once set, all new messages in the group will automatically vanish after the configured duration
Group Screenshot Protection
To prevent group members from leaking chat content through screenshots, you can enable group screenshot protection:
- Go to Group Settings → Privacy & Security → Enable "Block Screenshots"
- When enabled, taking a screenshot in the group chat will show a black screen or trigger a warning
- This feature works best on Android; iOS has system-level limitations that may affect effectiveness
Hidden Member Lists
In highly sensitive scenarios, you may not want group members to know each other's identities. SafeW offers a hidden member list feature for exactly this purpose:
- Only administrators can view the complete member list
- Regular members can only see themselves and the admins
- Sender information for messages can be configured to show only nicknames, with avatars and other identifiers hidden
Group Security Best Practices
Regular Member Audits: Periodically review your group member list and remove anyone who no longer needs to participate.
Use Time-Limited Invite Links: Avoid using invite links that never expire. Rotate links regularly to prevent unauthorized access from leaked URLs.
Enable Disappearing Messages for Sensitive Discussions: For particularly sensitive topics, enable short-duration disappearing messages to minimize data retention.
Verify New Members: For high-security groups, consider verifying new members' identities through safety number verification before sharing sensitive information.
Limit Admin Assignments: Don't create too many admins. Grant administrative privileges only to fully trusted members to minimize the attack surface.
How Group Encryption Works Under the Hood
Understanding the technical foundations of group encryption helps you judge what the app protects and what still depends on members, devices, and backups.
The Sender Keys Protocol
SafeW's group encryption is built on the Sender Keys protocol, an efficient encryption scheme specifically designed for group communications:
- Each group member generates a "Sender Key" and distributes it to all other members through secure one-to-one encrypted channels
- When sending a message, the sender encrypts it once using their Sender Key, and all group members can decrypt it using the corresponding key they received
- This approach is more efficient than individually encrypting messages for each member, while still aiming to preserve end-to-end group privacy
Forward Secrecy and Member Changes
When group membership changes — someone joins or leaves — SafeW automatically performs key rotation to maintain security:
- When a member leaves: Key rotation should reduce access to later messages, depending on current implementation and device state
- When a new member joins: Historical visibility should be checked against current group and sync behavior
- This mechanism is meant to reduce exposure after member changes, but group admins should still review membership and invite links regularly
